I just posted on how to get started choosing what product you want to sell, but what did I choose? I went with white gold wedding bands for women. Why? Because I know jewelry sells online (I actually have a client who sells tungsten rings for men online, so same general product but a different niche), Doba has a lot of white gold products on their site so there will be a good selection for my customers, if it works out well I can create a companion website to sell white gold wedding bands for men, and I was able to find a decent domain name (the next post will be about that).
The thing is, I’m no expert on white gold, jewelry, or weddings. In fact, I’m not even interested in any of those things. So did I make the wrong choice? Well, it was tough, because Doba doesn’t sell the things I’m really interested in. I’m an expert on skateboarding, and less so on triathlon. But Doba doesn’t have much skateboard stuff to speak of, and even if they had triathlon stuff that would put me in direct competition with one of my current clients who sells triathlon products online. I guess you could say that in selling white gold wedding bands I’m competing with my client who sells tungsten rings, but I’ll be selling to women, whereas they’re selling to men, plus we’re focusing on different metals, etc. Perhaps they’ll expand someday and maybe I’ll expand someday and we’ll end up being direct competitors, but I doubt it. Even if it does happen, we’re each a drop in the bucket when it comes to online jewelry retailers. And plus that client’s a friend of mine, so I’m sure if it becomes an issue we can work it out.

I think thats great! I didn’t get into jewelry because I was an expert, I just had connections and the same logic you used. And no worries, no issues here!
I think this is the approach of many internet marketers, there is a big market out there of many items so we can only try to promote what we like even if we have not sold it in real life.
