Many of you have expressed interest as to how the move to a virtual office has gone. Now that I have completed the move and have been able to experience it for a full week or two here are my thoughts:
Pros
1. The bathroom is closer.
2. If anything I’m getting more work done.
3. The phones work just like the phone in our office did. Better, in fact.
4. Internet works just fine at home.
5. Many of my employees were already contractors who worked remotely, so no big change there.
6. I really do not miss paying the rent at all.
Cons
1. No easy meeting spot for clients. So far it hasn’t been an issue, I’m just worried it might become one despite there being little basis for my worry.
2. The move itself was a big pain. Every day I’d look at what was left and think “Ok, one more trip and I’m done.” Then I’d make two more trips, and find myself saying “Ok, one more trip and I’m done” and then it would help all over again. But that’s just how moves are. Oh, and I really should have taken a photo of the apartment when everything was crammed in here and we hadn’t figured out where to put it all yet. What a mess.
Pro and Con
1. The mail. Since I set up a PO box that means I have to get in my car and drive somewhere to get the mail. That’s a con. However, I also don’t have to wait until 3-4 pm to get the mail, I swear I get mail a day earlier than I did before, and the mail still gets delivered on Saturdays, so there are some pros too.
So far I’m very glad I made the move. I haven’t experienced any negative consequences other than those temporary ones caused by the interruption of the move itself. Bear in mind my wife works and we don’t have children so those are issues many other people would get to deal with which I don’t, at least not yet. We’re filling out adoption papers right now so that could all change in a jiffy.
