LDS Entrepreneurs Groups on Facebooks and Linkedin.com

Recently I’ve created “LDS Entrepreneurs” groups on both Facebook and Linkedin. To join the Facebook group go here and to join the Linkedin group go here. As of this post the Facebook group has 42 members and the Linkedin group, which is growing at the rate of about 10 members per day, has 51 members.

So if you’re LDS and an entrepreneur, or interested in entrepreneurship, or interested in LDS entrepreneurs, or interested in Mormons, feel free to join either or both groups.

I guess I would be a little sketchy using my faith as a networking tool. Working on a LDS geared project now (www.mormonpedia.com) I have found that one of my greatest hurdles to overcome is to convince people I am not trying to use my faith for profit.

I see billboards for LDS real estate agents all the time. I initially think, I don’t want to think bad about other LDS people, so why put myself in that type of situation where I can see the dark side of otherwise good Mormon people? What’s your experience with these type of groups? Have people just merely used them as a place to talk with people of similar values? Or – do you find people trying to take advantage of that distinguisher? Thanks for your insight Josh.

I recognize that just because someone belongs to the same faith I do that doesn’t guarantee anything. In fact, if someone tried to use our common faith to sell me on something that would be a huge red flag for me. For me, having an “LDS Entrepreneurs” group is more about being an ice-breaker the same way being from the same town or having gone to the same college might be. “Oh, you’re LDS and interested in entrepreneurship? So am I!” and then you start chatting. Those who use their religion as a tool for building trust in order to do a business deal are, in my opinion, shady, and those who trust someone just because they’re of the same religion are, in my humble opinion, fools.

whats the difference bet joining an lds entrepreneur group and a non-lds one? whats the difference with doing busines between lds and non-lds people? I think its totally ok whether you’re dealing with an lds or non-lds client. the problem is when things are a done in an unethical way. Marriot makes money from mormons and no-mormons that stay at his hotel, non-mormons make money from mormons and viceversa. the name of the group suggests that that it is not only leaning towards a social but also a “entrepreneural” inclination.
