Treo or Blackberry?

Posted March 6, 2006 under Miscellaneous

I've been holding onto both a cellphone and a Palm for a long time now. I've tried out various devices that combine the functionality of the two only to return to them. But I'm just about ready to try the adventure again. My question to you, kind reader, is what would you recommend? I've narrowed it down to the Treo 650 because I like the Palm software and have used Microsoft's handheld software before and hated it. Plus I've heard the Treo 700 is still pretty buggy.

On the Blackberry side I need some recommendations as far as model.

My primary uses for this device, in order of importance, will be 1) as a phone, and 2) scheduler, 3) to read email, and 4) address book.

I'm also interested in recommendations anyone has as to specific services to go with. I will mostly be using this in Utah, but want something with good national coverage for travelling.

And if anyone has a specific business rep I can talk to I wouldn't mind being referred to them.

Ok dawg. I have the Blackberry 7200t or some-such. I personally like the look and feel of the palm, but the Blackberry's has the better email function. I haven't really used the scheduler much so can't really comment. If you're sending emails and that's a real consideration, then it's the blackberry.

Jessica Finnegan is a T-mobile business rep that is great. She's outfitted just about everone I know. Her email is jessica.finnegan@t-mobile.net, her phone is 801 787-2302 (hope she doesn't mind I posted that).

BlackBerry -- no question! I've had a BlackBerry for 2 years now, and I love it. The 7100 is nice because it is small enough to be considered a normal phone, but large enough to keep up on emails, etc.

I have had every device known to the geeky gadget man in the past 5 years and as such, I can easily say that Blackberry is NOT the way to go if a scheduler is more important then email. The 7100 is a good phone (although T-mobile service pales in comparison to Verizon - I have had both for a long time and there really isn't a comparison). The Treo 700w is really buggy - unless you set it up right, and then it has equal functionality to a blackberry in terms of email. Blackberry used to have it beat, but not anymore. My email/contacts/calendar are all wirelessly synced. I can schedule and accept requests for outlook meetings on my mobile, and have it wirelessly sync with my desktop. The Windows functionality for calendar and contacts is unbeatable by palm, blackberry or anyone else. The phone side of it I give a slight edge to the 7100 or the like (my wife has the counterpart for Verizon, which I much prefer aesthetically - I can't remember the model though) because they aren't running a true OS - which is why they suck at calendar and are mediocre at contacts. Do you have exchange server or access to it? If not check out www.4smartphone.net - this is what I use instead of exchange server to save some money and it works great.

OK, Alex got me to switch from my blackberry to the Treo 700w. I would have to say that the Treo has a weaker antena (the guy at the verizon store told me that also). I have the blackberry now and I love it. All I use though is the phone, Email, and Calendar.

It's all about the Treo 650 for me. I'd probably say Blackberry has the advantage w/email , with it's push technology. It's quite a bit faster than pulling over POP, etc. Beyond that, advantage 650. Plop Agendus on there and you've got one of the best PIMs in the industry, with a freaking sweet 320x320 screen. The 700w got a lower res, somewhat dim screen (240x240) which I don't like nearly as well. And there are some usability issues that didn't exist in the Palm version as well. Biggest con for the 650: Bluetooth 1.1 support only, which means super limited range on your headset.

FYI - I ended up getting the Motorola Q.
