I'm sure that the problem with backing up external drives has something to do with cost. I don't think you can back up 300GB or even 190GB a year for $50 (which is what Carbonite charges for unlimited backup) and make a profit. There's no point in having a vendor lose money on you -- eventually they'll go broke. Either that or they won't have enough money to make a stable and reliable product, as appears to be the case with mozy.

My business uses Intronis' eSureIT. I was talking to my account team over there and they said that they'll have an external storage option in the October release. Check 'em out. www.intronis.com

I've used Mozy since October of 2006. I back up about 190 Gigs on an external USB drive using XP and Vista. I would recommend the service. Although the service was flaky then it has been working reliably for me for over a year.

Have you looked at IDrive? I used them for awhile and recently switched to Mozy. I had the same problem with Mozy that you did with my initial backup but now that I have it all done things are fine. I left IDrive over poor customer service, even though their product is better. I had an issue where they over billed me for a couple of months and then I had to explain the problem to several people, it took 2 months to get resolved and they never followed through with the promised refund.

I am pretty IDrive lets you back up external drives. They're product even lets you back up network drives.
