Have you checked into this service? I was just checking them out before reading your blog posts. Agree with your issue but you should check these folks out.

Agreed! USPS needs to put a cancel Mail forwarding. I tried to end a temporary forward and had to call the post office my self... get this! the person that answered the phone said "hang on a second let me get a sticky pad so I can leave Tony (my mail man at my actual home) a message.

The mail is still being forwarded to my temprary address. I know Tony would have remembered this if he got the message. My doubts lay heavly on the "messageing system" being left to how good the adhesive is on the back of the sticky pad. I hope he usees The Bic brand next time.

Regards,

Seems to me that forwarding could happen at point of origin regardless - when the destination gets scanned in at the point of origin, they could look up to see if any forwards are currently active...It wouldn't really be that complicated....

I like the permanent addressing idea, however, though why make it an address at all? Just like a unuiqe social security number, everyone could have a unique post office number or PO Box - could be just numbers, or even a combination of numbers and their name. Kind of like email addresses.

That leads me to another idea. Why not have everyone tie their email address to a physical destination. Then, everyone would simply send your snail mail to jsteimle@donloper.com, for example, and the post office would then query the email server at donloper.com for the current physical address to mail it to. Of course, there would need to be really good security this way - so someone else doesn't route their mail to themselves or other places, but it would really be a simpler way to handle the mail forwarding:)
