Upgrading to MovableType 4.0 – Worth it or Not?

Not.

Pros:

- Better looking interface

- Slightly more user-friendly interface

Cons:

- Time

Or to put it in plain English, the MovableType upgrade takes more time than it’s worth. Perhaps there are some great things about the upgrade that I’m missing because I don’t use them, but as far as I can see it’s almost the exact same system with a new look and feel, and a new look and feel isn’t worth the upgrade process. If it were a one-click type of deal and took five minutes to do the upgrade I’d say sure, might as well do it, but it’s a bit more involved than that, and at the end of it all you look at it and say “Well, it looks better, but does anything really work differently in a way that will substantially improve the quality of my blog or the process of administering it?” Not that I can see.

I recently started using WordPress MU to handle multiple blogs, this gave me the advantages of MT with the ease and speed of WordPress! It may not be worth it to you to try and convert existing blogs to a new platform, but it may be worth looking in to for future ones.

one more reason to use wordpress?

The automatic upgrade plugin. I can update wordpress in three minutes, and it’s automatic.

Yeah, to be honest, I’m liking WP more and more. That’s what all my new blogs are being set up on. I’m not sure I like it so much as to try and transition my existing MT blogs over to WP yet, however.

    Here’s a few reasons I like WP.

    - Auto upgrade
    - Sitemap plugin
    - SEO friendly URLs
    - Akismet spam plugin (mine has caught 123,000 spam posts)
    - One-click database backup (emails it to you or downloads it to the desktop)
    - Huge plugin database.

The Auto upgrade and Akismet are my favs.
