If you were searching for a search engine optimization (SEO) company what keyword search terms would you search for in a search engine? Could I use the word “search” once more?
Most people feel more comfortable dealing with businesses that located within the same geographic area. This is because it facilitates face-to-face interaction, and there’s something comforting about being able to tell a service provider “Don’t mess with me, I know where you live.”
What geographic locales would you assume are producing the most interest in SEO firms and search engine optimization services? California? New York? Maybe you’d be surprised to find out. According to Overture’s keyword selector tool, these are the ten most popular geographic terms accompanying the search term “seo” where the number on the left represen
ts the number of searches done through Overture’s network (which does not include Google, so double the number if you want a closer to accurate idea of total searches being performed) during January 2006.

Indianapolis? Ok, if you add up all the times India is in there, it beats out Indianapolis, but seriously, why Indianapolis? And is it just me or is it suspicious that you can’t spell Indianapolis without “india”?
The other surprise for me was how many times “seo” was being searched for in Utah. Are there really more companies looking for seo services in Utah vs. California or New York? Apparently so. But why? Even though Utah prides itself on it’s technically savvy population, it’s still a tiny population relative to California, which can’t exactly be called a technologically backwards place.
And Virginia? Again, if you asked me which would come first, Virginia or Chicago, I’d be an idiot to choose Virginia, but there it is. Go figure.
