I grew up here in Utah and even in high school with all my friends getting part-time jobs in fast food and at malls, I don't think I've ever known anyone who worked for just minimum wage. At least in my lifetime it seems that the economy in Utah has been pretty good.

It certainly will, but I didn't want to address it too much because I'm not going to be a direct victim. If you want to read the opinion of a business owner who will be affected go read Alex Lawrence's post Minimum Wage Hike In Utah? A Short Comment From Someone It Will Impact.

I agree with you that market pressures will do a better job of managing wage than the government could but do you really think raising the minimum wage will have no effect on business? You preach from first hand experience of the trials and tribulations of business owners’ struggle to make payroll. Raising the minimum wage will result in a higher cost to do business. Example if you have one employee who is at minimum wage, currently at $5.15 per hour, and his pay increases to the bantered about $7 per hour, it is an increase to your payroll cost of 26% per hour. Employers are required to pay matching Social Security and Medicare taxes as well as unemployment so add on 6.2% for Social Security (11.5 cents per hour more), add 1.45% (2.7 cents per hour more) for Medicare. Can your business afford to give 26% raises? I don’t think many businesses can with out passing along a price increase. Market forces will adjust due to this increase. The number of jobs will decrease, and or prices will rise. What about the middle and upper level employees who now have to pay higher prices? They will realize their dollar doesn’t go as far and will ask for raises to off set the higher costs. This is not a simple operation.

This is definitely pandering by our leaders to the socialist movement in America. Politicians think they can buy a vote but the poor have a lower voter turn out. And since when is the government responsible for wages? Entitlement destroys America. We are who we are because of the hard work put in by our past citizens.

And another thing why don’t people take responsibility for their situation? Instead of lobbying the government to raise my wage, I personally have had to go back to school several times to keep up my standard of living.
